When my child cries at preschool — what do I do?

Crying is a natural reaction — it does not mean your child dislikes school. Six gentle ways to ease the transition.

Most children cry at the start — and that is a healthy sign of attachment to family. Crying does not mean your child dislikes school.

1. Don't sneak away. Say a clear, brief goodbye. Sneaking away makes future drop-offs feel unsafe.

2. Let your child bring a familiar object. A plush, a small blanket — anything that helps your child feel 'home' nearby.

3. Keep your goodbye routine consistent. A familiar phrase reassures your child that you will absolutely come back.

4. Trust the teachers. Children sense your calm. If you are tense, your child will be tense too.

5. Arrive on time. Late arrivals miss the morning settling block and make integration harder.

6. Ask the teacher how the day went. Most children cry for 5–10 minutes after you leave, and then play happily.
